WHY STUDY ACCOUNTING?
The Bachelor of Accounting is a specialist
postgraduate degree designed to prepare professional accountants
to take advantage of the expanding range of career opportunities
in accounting, finance and financial management.
WHAT JOBS WILL I GET?
When undertaken immediately after an undergraduate degree
it provides a platform to jobs in chartered accounting, banking,
industry or government. For those already working, it opens
new opportunities by providing new skills and a new focus.
Many of our students are studying part-time.
The program meets the requirements of both the CPA Australia
and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA)
and graduates may apply for associate membership of CPA Australia
or to undertake the ICAA's professional year.The course usually
must be completed within two years full-time or up to six
years part-time. However, credit may be granted for topics
completed at Flinders or other appropriate institutions. When
such credit is granted a time period for the completion of
the course will be set. Application for credit must be made
at the time of enrolment.

Approximately 80 percent of accountants are employed in the
commercial sector, whilst the remaining 20 per cent are employed
in public practice. Commercial accountants' career paths tend
to move from a base accountant (financial accounts or management
accountant) to financial controller, finance director or a
line management role. Public accountants offer services to
the public in auditing, financial accounting, taxation, insolvency
and management consultancy services.

The Master of Accounting is designed to provide an opportunity
for students with undergraduate training in non-accounting
fields to gain a professional accounting qualification. The
degree may be commenced in either the January or September
semesters and requires the equivalent of 12 full unit subjects
to be completed in a minimum of four semesters of study. The
course offers both a firm academic grounding and a 'hands
on' understanding of the industry. It is accredited by CPA
Australia and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia.
Completion of the twelve required subjects meets membership
requirements of the professional Accounting bodies.
Entry Requirements: Admission is based on an assessment of
work experience, prior academic record and motivation. Applicants
must have completed an undergraduate or postgraduate degree
in any discipline other than accounting, or hold a non-degree
professional accounting qualification with at least five years
work experience.
Career Opportunities: Master of Accounting graduates are
eligible for employment in professional accounting practices

Admission Requirements
Assumed Knowledge: It is recommended that students have Mathematics
T/Mathematic Applications (ACT) or Mathematics (NSW) and English
(major) (ACT) or English Advanced (NSW), or their equivalents.
International students need to meet the English language requirements
of the University of Canberra. Students should note the assumed
knowledge requirements for individual majors and minors when
choosing a program of study. The Division of Business, Law
& Information Sciences offers a Maths Preparatory Program
for students who need to enhance or refresh their mathematical
skill.
Professional Recognition: The Bachelor of Commerce is accredited
with CPA Australia and the Institute of Chartered Accountants
in Australia (for students studying accounting). The Australasian
Institute of Banking and Finance (for banking and finance
students) and the Australia Securities and Investment Commission
and the Financial Planning Association (financial planning
students).
MASTER OF PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNTING
The Master of Professional Accounting is a coursework degree,
based on three or four semesters of full time study or six
semesters of part-time study. The course is designed for graduates
who have not undertaken a major in accounting in their undergraduate
degree or who have undertaken an accounting major with an
educational institution incorporated outside Australia, and
who wish to become accountants. Students who have undertaken
an undergraduate degree with a major in accounting with an
Australian institution are ineligible for entry to the degree.
The course equips students with specialist skills in accounting
