Aeronautics - Pilot Training (Cert
IV to Diploma)
Program Details: Perth is a very safe flight training environment
due to minimal air traffic, sunny and stable weather conditions,
and a flat landscape. Singapore Airlines does much of its
training in Perth for these reasons. The course provides the
theoretical and flight training requirements for the Civil
Aviation and Safety Authority (CASA) Private Pilots License
(PPL) and Commercial Pilots License (CPL). Incorporated is
150 hours of flight instruction for the CPL. The students
also have the option of doing further study for the Airline
Transport Pilots License (ATPL) theory exams.
Duration (depends on entry & exit point): 18 months to
2 years full-time study
Study Location(s) Available: Theory components are done at
Midland. Any flying is done from Jandakot airport.
College(s): Swan TAFE
Commencement/Intake Availability: February and July
Special Entry Requirements: Students are required to undertake
an Aviation Class 1 medical examination by a CASA approved
Designated Aviation Medical Examiner. This can be done once
in Perth
Qualifications Available in this Program (depending on your
entry & exit points)
• Certificate IV in Aeronautics
• Diploma of Aeronautics
Program Components & Pathway: This program can include
multiple courses and different entry and exit points providing
students the flexibility to begin at the most suitable stage
and continue studying till they reach their desired outcome.

General Entry Requirements and Pre-requisites: This depends
on your entry point as explained in the pathway diagram above.
For Yr 10-11 and Yr 12 academic equivalence, please refer
to the Entry Requirements Summary (PDF) for your relevant
country. This also details the normal English proficiency
standard needed.
Career Outcomes: Students who successfully complete this
course will be eligible to apply for entrance to CASA Industry
Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) theory examinations. When the
student has completed the optional flight training component,
they can on recommendation attempt the CPL flight test. The
CPL is the entry level qualification for pilots to work in
the aviation industry. Students completing the Diploma will
be prepared to sit for the CASA industry (ATPL) examinations.
Further Study & University Options: Students who complete
the Cert IV and diploma can continue on to the Associate Degree
in Aviation at TAFE or the Bachelor of Science - Aviation
Studies at Edith Cowan University. With considerable credit.
Airport Management (Diploma)
Program Details: Provides skills for employment within an
airport management role. Students learn about property management,
book keeping, meteorology, airport planning, airport security,
passenger forcasting, aerodrome works, fire safety, dangerous
goods and many other related topics. As part of the course
the students complete a work experience component at one of
Perth’s airports.
Duration (depends on entry & exit point): 1.5 years full-time
study

Special Requirements: Students are required to complete work
experience at an appropriate airport.

Associate Degree in Aviation (Aeronautics)
Swan TAFE’s Associate Degree in Aviation (Aeronautics) will
provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge they
need to enter the aviation industry as an airline Pilot...even
if they have no flying experience!
The course has been designed in consultation with both International
and Australian Aviation Industry’s which means students receive
high quality pilot training whilst learning about all aspects
of modern flying including navigation, meteorology, flight
planning and flight performance and loading.
Upon graduation students will have the core skills they need
to ensure life-long learning in the constantly changing world
of professional aviation.
Associate Degree in Aviation (Aviation Management)
Swan TAFE’s Associate Degree in Aviation (Aviation Management)
is designed to provide students with an alternative, non-flying,
professional career option, in the air transportation industry.
The course has been developed alongside industry experts in
airport planning, design and management so students will gain
a wide range of relevant professional skills and practical
examples.
Swan TAFE’s expertise also allows students to broaden their
understanding of the factors involved in the establishment
and successful operation of an airport. The additional business
units offered within the course are specifically designed
to expand the range of management based employment opportunities
for students, upon graduation.
Associate Degree in Aviation (Maintenance Engineering)
This course (scheduled to start in Feb 2010) prepares students
for employment as airframe and powerplant maintenance engineers
and affords the opportunity to broaden their perspective and
ability to adapt to a rapidly changing industry. It is designed
to give an understanding of the maintenance practices of a
commercial aircraft operator, especially in the setting of
legal and commercial requirements.
At the completion students will have developed an understanding
of the planning and operational aspects of aircraft maintenance
in an airline context. The course also prepares students for
the written, oral and practical examination controlled by
Joint Aviation Authorities (JAAT) as well as provides managerial
and communication skills needed for supervisory positions.
By studying an Associate Degree course at Swan TAFE you will
be able to enrol in the 3rd year of a Bachelor of Commerce
Degree at Murdoch University.
Entry Requirements: The following criteria must be met by
students wishing to enter the Associate Degree program:
Academic qualifications: Successful completion of Australian
year 12 or equivalent international qualification;
AND
Entrance is also subject to english language admission requirements
such as:
IELTS overall score of 6 (Academic Version)
with no individual band lower than 5; or
TOEFL score of 530 or above; or
Medium of instruction at school being English, and satisfactory
grades in English in final examinations (such as “C” grade
at 0 level); or
TAFE Western Australia English Proficiency Test (administered
free of charge)
